Finding the right storage unit size is important because you don’t want to be left with too much or too little leftover space. Here are a few tips to help you choose the right storage size for your needs!
Ask Yourself Some Questions
Before you go picking your storage unit size, ask yourself some questions to help you determine how big or small of a unit you’ll need. Ask yourself:
- How much stuff do you need to store? There’s a big difference in the amount of space you need to store some holiday decorations and camping gear versus the contents of two rooms.
- How long do you need to store your items? If you need to store items for a long time, your stuff should have a little breathing room. If you’re storing for a renovation, a smaller unit that just fits your stuff will do fine.
- Will you be storing inventory for an expanding business? For expanding businesses, it’s always best to have some extra space to grow into.
- Are you storing fragile or oddly shaped items? If you’re just storing a few boxes, you can choose a smaller storage unit size. But if you’re storing a couch, a fragile sculpture, or tools, you’ll need some space to make sure they don’t get damaged while in storage.
Pack Up Your Stuff
You may have an idea of what you want to store, but walking through your house and packing it up is even more helpful. Not just making piles, but actually boxing your stuff up or putting it in plastic bins. This way you can see and easily calculate how much space you’ll need (we’ll go over this in the next step). Make sure your boxes and bins are sturdy, as you’ll want to stack boxes on top of each other to conserve space.
Pro tip: while you’re packing things up, make an inventory. This will help you keep track of what items are where and help you find everything when you remove your items from storage.
Estimate the Space You’ll Need
Once all your items are packed, you can pile them together and estimate the total volume of your belongings. If you’re storing a few items, pile and stack them together. If you’re storing a whole house, pile each room’s belongings and make an estimate of each room, then add them together with the calculation below.
To calculate the storage unit size you need, multiply the length and width of all your items stacked together, or add each item’s measurements individually. This will give you a total square foot measurement. For example, if the pile comes out to 5 feet by 10 feet, you’ll need at least a 50-square-foot storage unit.
Remember: most units have 8-foot ceilings. You won’t be able to stack up to 8 feet, but you will be able to stack your boxes a few high.
When in Doubt – Go Bigger
If you’re still a little unsure, it’s always best to go up a size. Being more economical by choosing a smaller unit isn’t always the best. Your items need ventilation while in storage, so accounting for a little room is a good idea. Also, if you cram too many items into a small unit, you will not only crush and damage your items, but it can become a safety hazard for you. For example, if boxes are stacked too tall, they could topple onto you.
